Types Of Pianos

Grand Piano

The grand piano is probably the most well-known type of piano. It is a large, horizontal piano, with the strings and soundboard extending away from the keyboard towards the back. The strings are struck by hammers that are thrown upwards when the keys are pressed. Its size allows for a rich, resonant sound, and its action (the mechanism of the keys) provides excellent control for the player.

Baby Grand Piano

This is a smaller version of the grand piano, designed to fit into smaller spaces while retaining much of the grand piano’s sound quality and aesthetic appeal.

Spinet Piano

This is an even larger upright piano, often found in music studios and schools. It offers a good sound quality and is more durable than smaller upright pianos.

Console Piano

This is a larger upright piano, with better sound quality than a spinet. It is a popular choice for homes due to its balance of size and sound quality.

Studio Piano

This is an even larger upright piano, often found in music studios and schools. It offers a good sound quality and is more durable than smaller upright pianos.

Player Piano

This is a piano that can play music automatically, using a mechanism that reads perforated rolls of paper or digital MIDI files. They can be either upright or grand pianos.

Digital Piano

A digital piano uses digital sampling or synthesis to reproduce the sounds of an acoustic piano. It offers a range of features, such as different sounds, the ability to connect to a computer, headphones output, and no need for tuning.

Concert Grand Piano

This is the largest type of piano, specifically designed for use in concert halls due to its powerful, resonant sound. It can be over 9 feet long.
